Radio - Contemporary Bhutanese Painting

"The inaugural radio station in Bhutan was established by a dedicated group of young individuals, the National Youth Association of Bhutan (NYAB), on November 11, 1973. As time strides forward, the realm of technology and science continuously evolves, propelling the world to unforeseen heights.

The timeless design of this classic radio serves as a poignant reminder—a cherished relic for every Bhutanese of that era. Today, the radio has metamorphosed, assuming diverse models, shapes, and sizes, integrated into modern gadgets. Personally, I harbor a fondness for antiquated radios, cameras, and other obsolete relics, remnants of an era scarcely remembered or utilized in contemporary times.

In this particular creation, I've imbued a touch of Bhutanese essence by depicting the backdrop with clouds reminiscent of Bhutan's scenic beauty."

Pema Gyeltshen was born in 1983 in Trashigang, Bhutan. His artistic journey began in his youth when he frequently doodled in school notebooks instead of focusing on lessons. In 1998, he joined the Voluntary Artists Studio Thimphu (VAST Bhutan), laying the foundation for his career as an artist.

After high school, he faced a challenging period of substance abuse and aimless wandering but had a transformative realization. He made a resolute U-turn, gained practical work experience, and honed his character.

In 2012, Pema committed fully to art, overcoming numerous challenges. He now concentrates on creating art, participating in exhibitions, and sharing his work globally, successfully selling his artworks both within and beyond Bhutan. CLICK for more information on him and contemporary art in Bhutan.
