Ara Palang - Contemporary Bhutanese Painting

The Ara Palang is a traditional Bhutanese container used to store and serve 'ara', a local distilled alcoholic beverage made from rice, wheat, or barley. The palang itself is often a cylindrical or barrel-shaped vessel, typically crafted from wood or metal, sometimes with intricate carvings or patterns on its exterior. The lid is tightly fitted to preserve the drink, and the container is designed to be portable, making it a common sight at festive gatherings and religious events where ara is offered as part of rituals.
 
In rural areas, the Ara Palang is an essential household item and holds cultural significance, symbolizing hospitality and the sharing of local traditions. Some modern versions may have a more polished finish, but the essence of the palang remains rooted in Bhutanese tradition.

Pema Gyeltshen was born in 1983 in Trashigang, Bhutan. His artistic journey began in his youth when he frequently doodled in school notebooks instead of focusing on lessons. In 1998, he joined the Voluntary Artists Studio Thimphu (VAST Bhutan), laying the foundation for his career as an artist.

After high school, he faced a challenging period of substance abuse and aimless wandering but had a transformative realization. He made a resolute U-turn, gained practical work experience, and honed his character.

In 2012, Pema committed fully to art, overcoming numerous challenges. He now concentrates on creating art, participating in exhibitions, and sharing his work globally, successfully selling his artworks both within and beyond Bhutan. CLICK for more information on him and contemporary art in Bhutan.
